Engineer – Vehicle specialists. From repairing armor to destroying an enemy tank annihilating your teammates, a good engineer is very much loved. Electrocute enemies with the repair tool if you’re feeling particularly amusing. Medic – These guys can place med packs around the battlefield to heal their team in strategic cover spots and can zap killed players back to life with the defib kit.
And you can run around zapping enemy players with the defib for pretty hilarious kill videos, too. Modes: Rush – Defend or destroy a base for as long as reinforcements are available.
Conquest – Capture and hold flags across the map, with vehicles unlocking the longer they’re held. Probably the most played mode right now. Squad Rush – A smaller, more aggressive version of Rush. Two squads of four each defending and attacking bases. This mode is great for organized play. Squad Deathmatch – Four squads with a single vehicle on the map. First squad to 50 kills wins.
With Frostbite 1. Fully destructible environments add an entirely new dimension to the battlefield as cover is destroyed around you and buildings can collapse on unfortunate squads. The game looks great aside from some low-res textures thanks to the consoles, and scales nicely.
You can adjust the FOV in the ini settings to your liking with quite a few graphics options to tweak until you find the frame rate sweet spot for your system. The UI and menus have been designed with a mouse and keyboard in mind, even if it depresses me that this is now considered a feature rather than a standard for a PC game. Special mention needs to be made for the sound quality.
Bad Company 2 uses full HDR sound with multiple settings for speaker type and a truly aggressive beast of a track called War Tapes. There is nothing like this mix in any other game on the market. If you have some nice speakers or quality headphones, switch to this setting and let it rip. I like Steam, but generally loathe anything that imposes install limits or interferes with my ability to play the game I just bought.
The DRM here finds a pretty appealing balance. The more militant faction of the anti-DRM groups will still be outraged, but for the most part it’s nothing but sound and fury. Bad Company 2 does have SecuROM, but it is not the heavy handed version that outraged so many including myself. SecuROM is used as a wrapper around the game executable and has a couple of support files in the game installation directory. This means that it does not install kernel software of any kind, only runs when the game is launched, and is completely removed when the game is uninstalled.
The game does require you to authenticate it, but you can do this in two ways: Disc Check: SecuROM will not go online at all, will never go online at all, and has no install limit. The DVD is required to be in the drive every time you want to play.
If allowed to do so, it will communicate to the master server to see how many times the game as been authenticated and to verify it is a legit copy. Once done, it will never go online again for that install and you can play completely offline without the disc. That’s it. They are automatically revoked when the game is uninstalled.
There are 10 available authentications available to be used at the same time, and each authentication is good for 10, days without reconnecting to the master server. There are options to simply deauthenticate the game without uninstalling it if you’re wanting to reformat the drive and don’t want to bother with an uninstall, for example.
This is the only option for digital copies for obvious reasons. In theory, you could install the game on 10 PCs with the online authentication and an additional PC to be used with the disc.
Even if you lose all of your online authentications, you can still use the disc if you have a retail copy until EA grants you more. This is very generous in an age where Ubisoft is trying to push single player games into being forcefully kept online. The devs have hinted that it’s something they are considering for later, but don’t take that as a promise written in blood.
More options for everyone! It’s not Battlefield 2’s huge 64 player maps, but they’ve compensated with excellent map design. Certain Other Devs definitely offered way too much, but BC2 might be a tad on the skimpy side. This makes the medic feel a bit weak in the beginning due to most of his tools having to be unlocked rather than having unlocks for the tools. This is more of a nitpick however. However, this does not ruin the game at all and everything has been tuned with the 32 player cap in mind.
This very well could be a negative for someone else, but I don’t miss it so far. There is plenty of cover and foliage that crouch works just as well without making snipers impossible to spot.
This is a bummer. This minus should hopefully go away within a week, but it’s definitely irking quite a few people right now. I can still play even within prime time, but there is noticeable lag when loading the server browser and accessing my character stats after a match. It wouldn’t be a Battlefield game without release day server browser problems though.
What can I say? But, despite some great things, the game’s been hurt by bugs and a broken server browser which defeats the purpose of dedicated servers. The Good The single player game is your basic romp through a bunch of levels that really don’t suck you in at all. You can’t really compare it to MW2 since IW is just good at that. DICE’s Battlefield series has always been about the multiplayer. That said, if you don’t mind the hyperaccurate AI well, if you sit still long enough , it’s decent fun but think of it as bonus content.
You’re really here for the BF multiplayer experience. Multiplayer is definitely fun once you get past the issues see below. There are four basic multiplayer game types: Conquest, Rush, Squad Deathmatch and Squad Rush which translates to domination, point-cap, mini-TDM, and–well–mini-point-cap.
With Conquest, two teams grab a handful of points. The more points you own as a team, the faster your opponents tickets tick down. Once your tickets reach zero, it’s game over for your team. Basically, classic Battlefield multiplayer.
Rush is essentially Search and Destroy from MW2 minus perma-death and multiplied by times since after destroying both targets the next two points and a new chunk of the map opens up. It’s actually a lot of fun and is probably the best part of MP for me at least.
The squad games play off the fact that BC2 carries over the squad system from BF2 minus the commander. Squads in the other modes allow to you spawn near living squad mates and give you bonuses for kills and the like. In the squad game types, you’re basically part of a squad and playing the relevant game mode Rush or TDM. It creates a more intimate game play experience but is also a bit more rare than the other modes.
Each one has access to a primary weapon, a pistol, a specialty kit which can be upgraded and a series of “abilities” or bonuses. For example, you can unlock scopes or better health kits with a wider range or vehicle abilities. The vehicles are a blast but for obvious reasons they can be taken down pretty quickly with RPGs, stationary ATs, and other attacks.
Of course, vehicles come with the usual problem of players who grab one and run off with it leaving you to run into battle But that’s a player issue more than a gameplay issue. Another nice feature is the “socialize” button. What it really is is a context-sensitive notification for your team. If your cursor is on a tank and you hit the key default is Q , your guy in-game will say something along the lines of “Hey, guys, it looks like we’ve got a tank over here. Same goes for other vehicles and players and can be used when you hover over objectives tell your squad to grab that objective or teammates e.
Red Faction. It’s quite frankly awesome. It also affects gameplay which it should where you can drop a building to get rid of a sniper nest or even better to blow an objective. Some structures aren’t destructible but most of them are. Lob a nade, use the blackhawk’s mini, call in a mortar strike or hit it with a tank and you can start breaking up a building. Really fun stuff. The Bad Outside of lag and network issues there were PunkBuster and general connection issues , the real problems aren’t when you’re playing The most critical thing you need in this game in order to access those ballyhooed dedicated servers and actually play the game–the server browser–is ridiculously inconsistent.
What’s wrong? Filters have been reset. Then there’s the the friend system Alright, you’ve read through all of that or rather skipped to the end , so what do you do? Despite the bugs, DICE has been trying to fix the major issues at least.
And, if you can get by the server browser and find a few servers you like, the game can be fun of course, as with any game, that’ll also depend on your teammates and the good stuff outweighs the bad for now.

While online is great there are a couple things which are annoying, sometimes finding a game is impossible, the server crashes sometimes, the Skill Level really fluxes erratically, some games I might get like 30 kills and 4 deaths and take out objectives and bunch of vehicles but I’ll go up one Skill Level and sometimes I’ll get killed once and drop due to disconnection and drop by The main thing is about after Level 31, leveling becomes pointless, you unlock nothing more and the experience requirements are nearly impossible to reach.
My only quips is that the single player was a bit short, didn’t have a lot of selection as far as weapons and vehicles to get used to for online and that it lacked a co-op mode without downloading a DLC even with the DLC there wasn’t local co-op. The multi player was great except for the fact that after a certain level you stopped unlocking things and that the map packs for it are just different game modes for the same maps and that there lacked a local multi player option.
I would definitely get this if shooters are in your alley, if you like the Bad Company series, if you’re a fan of Battlefield, a fan of DICE or if you want a more realistic shooter, if you’re not patient and if you cannot get used to the controls for online or do not like that there isn’t a more hearty single player experience, then maybe you should stick with Call of Duty or Medal of Honor or something along those lines.
The single player is great, you wont be disappointed! Graphics are awesome, and the backdrops are very nice eye candy. You can switch out your guns for different ones of your choosing when you come across certain “special crates” scattered around any given level, which is nice because that means you can switch up your play style when YOU want too.
The single player campaign is short and sweet prob hours play time , the story doesn’t grab you like MW2’s, but enjoyable none-the-less. Assuming that the bulk of people buying this game are doing so for the multiplayer, i’ll move on to that and devote the rest of my review to it.
I downloaded the demo for this game a little while ago and hated it. The controls were completely different then MW2 – i especially dislike that they use the right movement stick for ducking. Can’t tell you how many times i try to shoot a guy and ended up ducking and shooting at the same time. So i put it away and went back to MW2, as i was playing i realized that – “i hate this game”, i’m at the 4th prestige and have over saturated myself with it.
I cant stand the quick kill quick death formula anymore, the horrible spawn system, the team selection system, and especially the lack of team work i constantly come across. There is also the infamous “MW2 law”, similar to “Murphy’s Law”, where anything can go wrong in a match and when it does, it always seems to happen to YOU.
Ofcourse MW2 is a great game and a worthy purchase, but i personally have had my fill. So i picked it up again and gave it another shot I was playing as a medic and realized that i actually wasn’t focused on killing people, i was running around reviving my teammates and dropping health packs to keep them going, ofcourse i took out a few stray enemies here and there.
That brings me to the most important aspect of the multiplayer, you are actually encouraged to work as a team, which is a nice change of pace compared to MW2. I get just the same amount of points for shooting someone as i get for reviving them. It works beautifully. There is a leveling up system which is similar to MW2, nothing as developed though, but there is enough there to keep you coming back for more and you do unlock different sights, guns, gadgets etc Some are just for the particular class you use i.
The first BFBC had 2 deal breakers for me. One was their crazy health system where you jam a needle into your stomach when your health got low, which ofcourse is something you would have to do 50 times a match. The other was the lack of any kind of kill cam!
It’s no fun being sniped over and over again and having no idea where the sniper is when you respawn. Your health regenerates no needle to the stomach required and there is a kill cam, you don’t actually see the enemy kill you like in MW2, but you follow them around until you respawn so you know where they are and can carry out the proper justice. Also, locating enemies is somewhat unique to this game, when you see an enemy, you have to press the back button on your controller and then a red insignia appears over their head and they show up on your entire teams map for a brief amount of time.
I can’t express how gratifying it was to spot 3 snipers on a hill, press the back button, and watch them get lit up by my team – rockets, bullets, you name it, it went their way. Also, you get assit kill points for things like that, again, encouraging team work.
If you need a break from MW2, give it a try, you wont be disappointed. Again, one of the most impressive things about the multiplayer is how it rewards you for team work and incourages it. If actually playing a first person shooter AS a team, not just “lone wolfin it” while you’re IN a team, sounds good to you, pick this game up, you wont be dissapointed. I gave this game 4 out of 5 stars because it’s not perfect.
What game is? I have experienced some issues actually getting into a multiplayer match can’t find a match, busy, error, whatever,it means that their servers are full and they can’t handle it, and several matchs have ended abruptly due to server issues. But once you actually get into a match, it’s a ton of fun.
FYI: Snipers, snipers, snipers! What is the deal, everyone and their Mom wants to be a sniper. It seems that atleast a third to half of the players in the game are snipers. Not sure why, they always have the least amount of points and seem to stay in one spot most of the game Switch it up! Apache helicopters with missles are extremly unbalanced.
What i mean by that is it is far to easy for a skilled pilot to get an insane amount of kills, to the point of feeling unfair because it’s so hard to take it down.
When playing ‘rush’ on the map featured in the demo the snow map which takes place during the day , there is a powerful Apache on that map, but you’re given a good amount of tanks which help with taking it down, so it’s not that extreme. I’ve played 2 games thus far where my team was about to seal the deal and take the 3rd island when the defenders hopped in that freakin apache and annihilated everyone, it got so bad that most of my team dropped out, including myself. No point in playing any longer when you’ve died 5 times in a row because the apache is hovering over your spawn base firing rockets at you as you spawn in.
I equipped the engineer class and so did half my team and we were shooting rocket after rocket trying to take it down, nothing was working. By my 5th death in a row, of not be alive more then 30 secs, i dropped out.
The first time it happend, it was extremly frustrating because my team was actually good, everyone was playing their role well, that’s why it seemed extremely unfair.
The second time, i knew the drill at this point and gave it 5min, if it wasn’t taken down in that amount of time, we dropped out. At that point, it just becomes a waste of time. This is by far the biggest flaw i’ve found in the game. Basically, you’ve invested min to get that far in a match, then putting all player skills to the side, it boils down to who can get to the Apache first. They need to either lower the health of that particular Apache or make the rocked launcher system easier to use against it, ie-better guidance, tracking, more powerful, something!
It just seems incredibility unbalanced. I was playing a ‘rush’ match and my team was defending and we were actually able to jump the spawn base of the attackers and smother them the entire match, they didn’t get to set one ‘com station’ off, seemed unfair for the other team, we should’nt have been able to do that. Also, i’ve spawned into mortar strikes twice spawning on a teammate , that was purely bad luck on my part though, nothing against the game.
Or i’m put on a team where the top player has pts and the other teams top player has points, usually a good measure of how “good” your team is going to be.
Again, my rating still stands, it’s a great game and a ton of fun, just be aware of the 3 island map playing rush, try to get to that Apache first, if not, be ready for game over. See all reviews. A heavily wounded player will see dirt and blood around the edges of the screen, as an illustration of injury. Bad Company 2 features a story-driven single-player campaign. For most of the narrative, the player takes control of Preston Marlowe, one of the members of the titular “Bad Company”. The exception to this is the first mission, which is set prior to the rest of the campaign.
Each mission is divided into a series of objectives, often interspersed with cutscenes which simulate the style of war films. While the other members of Bad Company will engage in combat, the game relies upon the player to complete the objectives and kill most of the enemies.
Although the player’s computer-controlled allies can never die, they cannot carry out objectives. Aside from infantry combat, the campaign contains several missions in which the player controls a vehicle, or mans a weapon turret while a teammate controls the vehicle.
Each weapon in the campaign is considered a collectible – the first time the player picks up that type of weapon, a “Collectable Unlocked” message appears.
There are also sensor stations throughout the campaign which the player can find and destroy – this is also recorded in the campaign stats. The Supply Drop crates will remember any weapon the player picks up and this weapon will then be available for the rest of the campaign.
Multiplayer is class-based, with four classes: Assault, Engineer, Medic, and Recon. Each class has a variety of unique weapons and equipment, and serves a specific role in combat. There are also some weapons that can be used by any class, such as pistols and shotguns.
Each class gains experience and levels up separately. New items are unlocked by earning experience points , which are gained for performing actions conducive to the goals of the player’s team, such as eliminating enemy players, healing teammates, or capturing or defending points of interest. These points count towards a total of 50 ranks. Bonuses to the base number of points can be awarded under certain circumstances such as eliminating an enemy by means of a headshot.
Multiplayer mode features 15 vehicles, including new additions, such as the Sikorsky UH Black Hawk , a quad bike , a four-man patrol boat , a personal watercraft , a ZU mounted on a BMD-3 armoured personnel carrier, and a Northrop Grumman MQ-8 Fire Scout , controlled via remote computer terminals.
The available maps are set in various environments such as South America and Alaska , near the borders of Russia , [13] similar to those seen in the single-player. A dog tag system, as seen in Battlefield and Battlefield: Bad Company , is also used, awarding players with their opponents’ dog tags when they defeat them with a knife attack.
Conquest: Features the classic gameplay of the Battlefield series. Players must capture and defend flags for as long as possible. If a base is taken, it can be recaptured, and the cycle can repeat until the game’s end. Every kill depletes one ticket, and tickets gradually decrease when one team controls more than half of the flags on the map. Vehicles can spawn once a flag is captured.
When one team’s tickets are depleted, that team will lose the game. Lost tickets can be regained by reviving fallen teammates. Onslaught: Tasks one squad of up to four players to capture certain points on the map, allowing the squad to advance. The game is won by capturing all the points. Unlike other modes, the only enemies are bots. This game mode features new lighting and time of day on existing maps, as well as new vehicles.
Rush: Players must defend or destroy pairs of M-COM stations until either the attackers run out of respawn tickets or all of the stations are destroyed. An M-COM station can be destroyed by planting a charge, using explosive weapons or ballistics, or simply by demolishing the building in which it is located.
However, not all M-COM stations exist in destructible buildings, forcing players to use a variety of methods to achieve the same goal. When a charge is planted by the attacking team, an alarm is activated and the defenders have a limited amount of time to get to the M-COM station and disarm the bomb before it detonates.
Squad Deathmatch: Features up to four squads, each fighting against the other. An infantry support vehicle is available for any squad to claim, giving a significant advantage. The first squad to score fifty kills wins the match. Squad Rush: Similar to Rush, but consists of only two squads, one defending and the other attacking. The maps used for Squad Rush are smaller versions of those for both Conquest and Rush modes.
There are only 2 M-COM stations in each round. However, as foreshadowed by the scientist’s warnings, the commandos witness the weapon firing and subsequently perish from the resulting tsunami , sparking a myth within the U. Despite evading Russian soldiers and completing the mission successfully, the device is discovered to be a fake. Impressed with their previous activities, Army General Braidwood has the squad transferred into the Special Activities Division and assigns them a new mission; to contact Agent James Wyatt called Aguire in-game , much to the disappointment of Redford, who had hoped to retire after the previous mission.
The squad travels to Bolivia in search of the agent, and after many firefights, they eventually save Aguire. He sends them to retrieve his scalar technology intelligence from a French weather satellite that can be controlled from a base in the Andes. Sweetwater lands the satellite and the squad successfully thwart a Russian attempt to destroy it.
Marlowe locates the data server and proceeds to descend the mountain during a blizzard while dodging Russian patrols. He survives, and is extracted by the others. During extraction, Aguire briefs the squad about the man responsible for rebuilding scalar weaponry; Arkady Kirilenko, a Russian Army colonel the squad encountered in Russia.
Kirilenko is hoping to use scalar weaponry to disable America’s power grid and pave the way for a Russian invasion. He is believed to be hiding in Chile. The squad head there, aided by US forces, and find Kirilenko, who escapes again. Left with only Kirilenko’s papers, Sweetwater discovers there is a shipping manifest for an abandoned ship called the Sangre Del Toro. Aided by the rest of the squad, Marlowe finds the ship and retrieves a compound essential to the use of the weapon, while also discovering the truth behind Operation Aurora – the US military knew it was a suicide mission, and the operation was planned in order to learn more about the weapon’s capabilities.
While attempting to meet Aguire in Ecuador , the squad’s helicopter is shot down and they are separated. Along with their helicopter pilot, Flynn Eric Loren , they regroup and escape the local militia. Redford gives Aguire the compound before finding out that Aguire has double-crossed them by allying himself with Kirilenko. Aguire reveals that he wants revenge against the United States for what happened to his father, Thomas Wyatt one of the commandos killed in during Operation Aurora.
Despite this, Kirilenko betrays Aguire and kills him. Before he can kill the squad, however, Flynn intervenes and saves them at the cost of his own life. While the squad is mourning Flynn, they hear Kirilenko talking through a guard’s radio. Marlowe knifes the guard and the squad proceeds toward the city of Quito. Here, after battling squads of South American and Russian troops, they find a large An cargo aircraft that is believed to house the scalar weapon.
This is confirmed as a powerful electromagnetic pulse is suddenly released, disabling all electronic equipment in the city except the aircraft. Haggard and Sweetwater become disheartened, with Haggard going so far as suggesting the squad abort the mission.
