I’m trying to get an understanding around Google Chrome support for R2. Opens a new window. I appreciate that R2 is technically 8. I will most likely be purchasing new server hardware to replace this as it was originally a R2 server that I ran the in-place upgrade on. But that is planned to do later in the year. I’ve found a few discussions online about this issue, but given no real guidance other than a GPO to supress the warning message in Chrome.

Edge seems to have the same EOL date for 8. Am I just going to have to run this server without an internet browser to prevent using unsupported software? Is it a Remote Desktop Services server for users?

Unless it is, there should be no need for a web browser on a server. Consider buying a volume licence of Windows Server that can then be transferred to the new server hardware. It is the vendors choice when and how long they choose to support something, that doesn’t always coincide with the products EOL.

Zebra Computers is an IT service provider. First off, why do you need a browser on a server anyway? Not best practices to browse on a production server, especially if running on an administrative account. And those browsers won’t just stop working, of course. Probably will be a while before secure websites start blocking those OS agents. Looks Like Mozilla Firefox will hold out for a while. Any reason not to just upgrade that Server to or ?

And if you have the resources, if it’s a Physical machine, this is a great time to virtualize it, and perhaps you can put off hardware upgrades for a time. Maybe migrate to SSDs etc. Login or sign up to reply to this topic.
