But they don’t really need to when they’re capable of making music as good as These Times; this is passionate and rewarding music from artists still exploring new territory with truly satisfying results.

That was followed by the experimental free-form psychedelic The Universe Inside. Just look at the song lengths; , , , and Building off of the legacy of their earlier “John Coltrane Stereo Blues” of 9 minutes with live versions well over the ten-minute mark. A very influential band for the alternative and indie-rock genres, many considered them to be a ’80s version of the excellent Velvet Underground and while there are similarities between Steve Wynn’s vocals, the noisy guitar lines, and even Kendra Smith singing a mellow track the excellent “Too Little, Too Late” as Nico had done on the Velvet Underground’s debut, these songs are timeless on their own and have aged like a fine wine.

The opener “Tell Me When It’s Over” is one of several fantastic songs with its ringing guitar line leading the way.

The title track is the band’s tour de force, their “Sister Ray” or “European Son”, just as exciting as both but more focused. The release has several bonus tracks, including “A Reason”, which songwise is on par with the original album, and early and rawer versions of “Armed with an Empty Gun” and “Still Holding on to You”, which would appear on their next album, Medicine Show. The Days of Wine and Roses is a classic. Highest recommendation.

One of the best albums to come out of Los Angeles, it was absolutely mind-bendingly different and fresh when it came out. One person found this helpful. I am skeptical ordering vinyl records through the mail. Amazon has done a nice job protecting these fragile items from the elements and from handlers that might not be as uptight about their care as the end user would be.

I have bought this album at least 4 times and I’d buy it another ten. It changed my life when it came out, it still does every time I listen. Great album, great remastering, g! The sound is fantastic. I love Steve Wynn’s growl. This is one of my desert island albums, and this pressing is worth every penny.

If you like Dream Syndicate you’ll probably already have this – if not you should check them out. One of the best, if under-rated, guitar sounds around at the time and the drumming is worthy of a special mention. If you like clean, well-pressed vinyl then this will be a real bonus. Highly recommended by comedian Stewart Lee btw. Released in , the Dream Syndicates debut is an outstanding piece of music.

The dramatic tension and introverted lyricism that pervades the album is reminiscent of the work of Television, Talking Heads and the Go-Betweens amongst others. However, their overall sound is nevertheless distinctive and original. The harmonies are somewhat unsettling and abrasive and the lyrics tell stories of alienation, depravity and terror that reflect a kind of raw realism.

They were not only the first band of the s to comment on the nightmares of their generation in the manner of Lou Reed and Bob Dylan, but they were unquestionably the best.

Their exceptional achievement was to conflate this neo-Reed-ian-Dylan angst with the sounds of the new-wave and bridge them with the emerging pyschedelic revival of the period. So although the sound of the band belonged to the pyschedlic revival of those years, it transcends it, resulting in distinctive vibrant energized licks.

Hynotic riffs propel the song forward with purpose. The lyrical refrain “Don’t believe anything you see on tv cos they’ll never happen to you” reflects the cynical response to the saturated media-age. The song is a crescendo of smooth and rough. Translate review to English.
